I said, “You’re very complex, so it’s not easy to play you. And then she asked, “How are you playing me?” And I said, “Well, you’re very complex.” She loved that I said that. But then she’ll say things and you’re like, Ooh, so it’s more conflicted. There’s something very childlike about her.
She’s not aggressive, she’s not super rough and tough. The thing that I liked about her too was there’s something so gentle about her.

So as soon as I went in the jail and I saw the meeting room, I was like, “Yes, it’s a round table.”Īt what point in the process of filming the series did you meet Anna?Ī little over two weeks ago, so very recently.
If you want to have group therapy and there’s a table, keep it in a circle because it makes it more communal. No, no, it was a round table, which made it better because if you read any psychology or therapy books, long tables or square tables are not good. I was afraid she wasn’t going to like me because of course I want the person who I’m playing to like me. It wasn’t that I was scared I just didn't know what to do. And then when she came out, I didn’t know what to do with my body. We were waiting for seven minutes, and it felt like the longest seven minutes ever. I was terrified even though I wanted to meet her. How much prep work and research were you able to do about Anna before you started filming? Those subtle things make a huge difference. So putting in the fake teeth actually filled in and made it more rounder. Mine can sometimes look more angular, if I’m being really objective about my face. It gave me the same teeth as Anna, but it also filled in my face. Is it possible if we can try fake teeth? If it doesn’t look good, let’s just drop it.” So we did a fake-teeth test, and it looked great. The next day I said to David Frankel, the director, “I notice something with her teeth.” And then I said, “Look at mine. She’s doing a funny expression, and I noticed her teeth were completely different than mine, because I have a gap tooth. I was looking at different images on the internet, and there was this one really strange image of Anna looking like she’s in kind of Halloween clown makeup. It was insane when I first saw myself in the mirror, with the wigs, the glasses, and everything. It’s crazy because when you play a part for more than a month-even though I don’t have the accent-I will start talking like her.
Glamour : What did you think when you first saw yourself in character as Anna? Here, Garner is pictured as Delvey in Marrakech. “And then in three weeks I’m going to have Southern accent when Ozark starts up.”Īctor Chris Lowell, who stars as Noah in Inventing Anna, gave Glamour exclusive images he took while on set. “It’s like I’m living Anna Delvey’s life,” she jokes of the intense schedule that has taken her across the world. But at the time, it's business as usual, and Garner has been burning the candle at both ends between filming Anna, starting production for the final season of Netflix’s Ozark (where she’s a double Emmy winner for her portrayal of Ruth Langmore), and promoting her film The Assistant at Sundance. When we talk, it’s February 2020-unbeknownst to Garner and I, we’re less than six weeks away from the world shutting down because of the coronavirus. We also happen to be sitting in the Riad, a private bungalow, next to the one the real Delvey stayed at when her massive con started to unravel in the spring of 2017. And we’re not just anywhere in one of Africa’s busiest and most popular cities-we’re at La Mamounia, a world-class resort that is an important setting for the sixth episode of Inventing Anna. Julia Garner is in costume as the fashion-savvy society wannabe and con artist Anna Delvey when I sit down with the Emmy winner in Marrakech, Morocco.
